  1. Chinese politician, Communist Party (CCP)
  2. chair 1981-87. A protege of the communist
  3. leader Deng Xiaoping, Hu presided over a
  4. radical overhaul of the party structure and
  5. personnel 1982-86. Hu, born into a peasant
  6. family in Hunan province, joined the Red Army
  7. at the age of 14 and was a political
  8. commissar during the 1934-36 Long March. In
  9. 1941 he served under Deng and later worked
  10. under him in provincial and central
  11. government. Hu was purged as a `capitalist
  12. roader' during the 1966-69 Cultural
  13. Revolution and sent into the countryside for
  14. `re-education'. He was rehabilitated 1975,
  15. but disgraced again when Deng fell from
  16. prominence 1976. In Dec 1978, with Deng
  17. established in power, Hu was inducted into
  18. the CCP Politburo and became head of the
  19. revived secretariat 1980 and CCP chair 1981.
  20. He attempted to quicken reaction against Mao.
  21. He was dismissed Jan 1987 for his relaxed
  22. handling of a wave of student unrest Dec
  23. 1986.
